See our countdown to the greatest adaptation of the novel ahead. This gallery was originally published May 13, , and most recently updated Dec. So, for undermining the integrity of the novel, denying us the pleasure of period costumes, and forcing in really awkward soldier-Skype scenes where there ought to have been lovely letter-readings, we hereby disqualify this recent entry into the Little Women cinematic tradition from being ranked. We cannot even begin to describe why the miniseries ranks last, because there is not one thing about it that is not as wrong as can possibly be. There is nothing good to say about this adaptation. Nobody would ever accuse Louisa May Alcott of producing a cold, hard book in Little Women , but George Cukor really laid on the schmaltz in this pre-Code take on the story without any pre-Code sexiness , which stars four women clearly in their mids as the teenaged March sisters including a miscast Katharine Hepburn as Jo. It's a classic for a reason. Winona Ryder makes a wonderfully winsome Jo, Claire Danes an impossibly sweet Beth, and Christian Bale a perfectly charming Laurie in the beloved film which reigned as the unquestionable best for 25 years.
About the Series
The audience was overwhelmingly comprised of women—and the voting memberships of various Hollywood awards ceremonies are obviously not. The team behind the film hopes to reverse that by the time Oscar nomination voting opens on January 2. RSVPs for the first screening in October, as well as many others that Sony Pictures hosted around Los Angeles in recent weeks, were skewed about two to one in favor of women. The team behind Little Women was braced for bad news last week when the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes announced their nominations—and it got it. The film, which opens nationally on December 25, received only a dramatic-actress nod for Saoirse Ronan from the Globes, along with an original-score nod for composer Alexandre Desplat. It got nothing at all from SAG.
But I was looking for a hallway while we were scouting. And I wanted a long hallway, and I had this idea for how it would look. And then I just kept coming back to this location because I liked it. And then I came back at night, and I thought, oh, you could see the dancers through the window, and then see them outside as these figures having their little party on the porch. But I did want to feel joyful and young, like kids dance. And this is part of the story that takes place in their childhood, obviously. And it has this very snow globe quality.
